Several sections of the Via Emilia Scauri, which connected Derthona to Acquae Statiellae and then continued to Vada, are still perfectly passable. It seems like you are on the embankment of a disused railway: a straight embankment (from which the Levata hamlet that the road crosses takes its name) that cuts efficiently and rationally across the plain. Travelling along it while thinking that under the gravel there are layers of construction of an ancient Roman road is exciting.
