Using a piece of charcoal, the miller marked the weight on the outside of each sack of grain or flour. To do this, the miller used a complex system of symbols. For example, a line before a number meant "almost," while a line after meant "a little more." These symbols were incomprehensible to outsiders, resembling a secret code. It was also colloquially known as "meulefrans."

This octagonal windmill comes from the municipality of Schulen (Herk-de-Stad). It was built around the year 1800. The mill was used to grind grain into flour. In the 1950s, one of the sails broke and the mill was taken out of use. The owner sold the building to Bokrijk in 1954. You can regularly see the mill in action in the museum. View the daily program and find out when a miller is present.
