The airfield Kleinköris, which was commissioned in 1969, served as a field air base for the Fighter Squadron 7 (JG-7) of the former East German Air Force. The squadron was stationed at the airfield Drewitz. In addition to accommodation for soldiers emerged a tank farm and an ammunition storage. To keep the airfield operational, the JG-7 was placed under the Airborne Battalion-7 (FTB-7) and the Intelligence and Air Traffic Control Battalion-7 (NFB-7). Exercises in pajamas were done several times a year. In 1972 the squadron was given the honorary name "Wilhelm Pieck".

Over the years, several bunkers were built on the site.
In 2007, director Bryan Singer filmed parts of the feature film "Operation Valkyrie - The Stauffenberg Attack" starring Tom Cruise on the former airfield.

That was the tower of the Klein Köris airfield! The airfield had a 1,850 m long and 37.5 m wide grass runway! The runways were paved!
