The station was opened in 1859. The present reception building was built in the neo-baroque style between 1907 and 1913 by the German architects Alexander Rüdell, Jüsgen and Scheuffel. The landmark is the imposing clock tower. On the side, in a pavilion, which is connected to the main building by an arcade, was the Prince's Station of the Grand Duke, which, after various social and cultural conversions, now houses a bistro.
