In order to protect the city of Oslo against attackers from the sea, Håkon V had a castle built on a rocky outcrop around 1299. This was gradually expanded into a fortress and the castle was replaced by a palace.
King Christian IV (1588–1648) had it modernized in the Renaissance style and made it his royal residence.
Today there is a military museum, the resistance museum and the burial place of the Norwegian royal family.
