Þjóðveldisbær is a replica of the Viking-age Icelandic court of Stöng, which was buried under ashes during an eruption of the Hekla volcano in 1104.

The reconstruction, true to the original, consists of three buildings - including the nave and the church - and was begun in 1974 to mark the 1100th anniversary of the settlement of Iceland.
