Since 1885, the date of Victor Hugo's enthronement, the Pantheon has housed the remains of the country's great men and women: Voltaire, Rousseau, Marie Curie and Simone Veil. A true temple of the Nation, it was built by Soufflot under Louis XV to the glory of Saint Geneviève, patron saint of Paris and symbol of the monarchy.
