Since it was not possible to make burials in swampy, damp soil in the valleys in the past, people from the area decided to build a cemetery and a small chapel high up on this mountain. The original church burned down completely after a lightning strike in 1687 and was replaced in 1702 by the church that still exists today.

The St. Michaelskirche or Bergkirche, as it is also called, may be the continuation of a castle chapel from the 11th or 12th century. The location may have been chosen because burial in the valley and thus the creation of a cemetery was not possible due to the water-rich swamp-like area.
