The historic buildings in the surrounding district are being restored and modernized as "captains' houses". In this so-called water city at the harbor gate is also the entrance to the Ratsdelft, the harbor basin that was created in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Emden, today an important industrial location, rose to become one of the most important seaport cities in Europe. Prosperity brought staple rights, ship and trade duties, whaling, herring fishing and last but not least the diligence and skill of Calvinist religious refugees from the Netherlands.
