When I visited Ancona in early May 2024, extensive renovation work was taking place. Unfortunately, due to the many construction site barriers, hardly anything of the fortress could be seen.
The first historically confirmed information about the presence of defensive structures on the top of the Astagno hill refers to the existence of the Tower of S. Caterina between the 10th and 12th centuries, after the name of the church built nearby, also called della Guardia.
