It's worth taking a closer look at the memorial. It lists all the fallen soldiers from both World Wars and the 1870/71 War. 270 soldiers died in World Wars I and II alone - that's 14% of the population or 30% of the men in Vohburg, which had around 2,000 inhabitants at the time. What madness. If you read through the names listed, you'll quickly see which names were fashionable for boys, or lads, as they say in Bavaria: Joseph, Paul, Franz, ... Many of them are hardly to be found in birth registers today.
