The Bramiana Dam artificial lake was built in 1986 in Bramiana to serve the 30,000 greenhouses of Ierapetra. It is located 5 km northwest of the town, where the road connects Ierapetra and Kalamafka village. The lake covers an area of 1,050 hectares and has a capacity of 15 million m³, making it the second largest wetland in southern Greece, after Potami Dam in the Amari Valley.

The water is mainly supplied from springs in Kefalovrysi of Kalamafka, from the Krygios River, from the Selakano Forest and Males area, from the springs of Malavra and from the springs of the Korakas Gorge of Meseleri.

This artificial lake, situated in the middle of an arid region, has become an important wetland and a stopover for migratory birds. Today, it attracts the largest population of waterfowl in Crete. According to the Natural History Museum of Crete, over 218 different bird species were recorded in the area in 2010, a very large number for such a young lake. All these factors have contributed to the designation of Bramiana as a national park.
