The longest river span of the Second World War had a length of more than 1200 meters and was located between Oeffelt and Gennep across the Maas. This impressive pontoon bridge was completed within two weeks by the British engineers of the Royal Engineers and consisted entirely of Bailey bridge elements on floating pontoons. Early in the morning of February 20, 1945, the bridge was ready and the first military vehicles made a direct crossing from Brabant to Limburg.

On 11 May 2022, in the presence of Major Edwin 'Ted' Hunt MVO, a monument was unveiled in memory of the longest Bailey pontoon bridge with a length of 1222 metres.
As part of Operation Veritable, it was necessary to build a bridge over the Maas as quickly as possible so that English troops and equipment could push through to the Rhine.
As a result of heavy rainfall and the blowing up of the dams in the Roer, the Maas was very high.
