The blue horse culture is reminiscent of the Emscherbruch Dickköppe (Emscherbruch Dickköppe). They were bred in the Emscherbruch from local wild horses and sold at the Cranger Horse Market – the forerunner of today's Cranger Kirmes (Crangue Fair). Dickköppe were often used as pit horses in the mining industry and later became the heraldic animal of Herne. Their descendants are the famous Dülmen Wildpferde (Dülmen Wildpferde).
