The ‘Taman Fatahillah’ is the historic center of Batavia and was first mentioned in 1627 as the ‘Nieuve Markt’. Over the centuries, the square has been restructured several times. Today, it is home to the ‘Jakarta History Museum’, in the former town hall (Stadhuis) of the Dutch colonial power; the Wayang Museum, dedicated to the Javanese Wayang puppet show; the Fine Art and Ceramics Museum in Kota, whose building formerly served as a court; and the ‘Kantor Pos Kota’, which has been used as a post office since the late 1920s.
