The city of Paro is located in western Bhutan on the Paro Chhu. Paro was the cultural, commercial and political center of the country until the capital was moved to Thimphu in 1962. It is a city with many holy sites and historical buildings scattered throughout the valley of the Paro Chhu. Paro International Airport, Bhutan's only international airport, is located here - at an altitude of 2,200 m.

It is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, numerous temples and monasteries, and stunning natural beauty, including the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest). Paro also served as the country's summer capital and was its most important cultural and economic center until the capital was moved to Thimphu.
