The city of Paro in the ‘Paro Chhu’ valley lies at an altitude of 2,200 meters. From the ‘Paro Ta Dzong’, the national museum, you have an excellent view of the city and the rice fields in the plain at the bottom of the valley. To the south, the view extends as far as the international airport.

‘Paro Ta Dzong’ was completed in the mid-17th century as a circular watchtower about 100 m above the ‘Rinpung Dzong’ to monitor the valley of the ‘Paro Chhu’ as an outpost against potential attackers from Tibet. The watchtower was part of an integrated defense network with two other towers and fortified walls.
In 1968, at the request of His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the building was converted into the National Museum of Bhutan and the official name of the site was changed to ‘Namse Bangdze’ (Treasury of the God of Wealth).
