Water, drinking, industrial and industrial water was a basic requirement for the development of a city. Without water there is no city. It was that simple in the Middle Ages. As the population grew, the need for water naturally increased. And so the famous city stream system came into being in 1175. The Brigach was diverted far from the city and flowed into three canals in the urban settlement and there through streets and alleys.
