Great example of a typical 1600s church with boxed pews for separating the sexes and the different social classes. The church has the Athelhampton crypt containing effigies of the Martyn family with two in full medieval knight outfit. Puddletown was the inspiration for Wetherbury in Thomas Hardy's 'Far from the Madding Crowd' and the church was the setting where Captain Troy spends the night in the church porch after laying flowers on Fanny's grave.
