The southern Miren tower was used to oak geographical distances. In the middle was the Helmert Tower, built in 1893 on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam. The northern Miren Tower is located in the Nedlitz Königswald.
Using a high-precision angle measurement, the Prussian Geodetic Institute measured the positions of the mires from the Helmert tower. The aim was to prove the displacement of the earth's axis of rotation, to determine the shape of the earth and the flattening of the poles. The Prussian Geodetic Institute in Potsdam was a world leader in the imperial era.

The tower is a so-called Mirenhaus. Another Mirenhaus is further north in the Königswald. Both miren houses are located on a north-south axis to the Helmert tower, which is located on the site of the geological research center in Potsdam. These mires were used to adjust the meridian circle of the passage instruments that were installed in the Helmertturm.
