Jailolo is a former sultanate on the west coast of Halmahera Island. Before the arrival of Europeans, the autonomous Sultanate was the main political power on Halmahera. In 1551 it was conquered by a combined force of the Portuguese with warriors from the Sultanate of Ternate. Later it stood for two centuries. under the control of the Dutch and the neighboring Sultanate.
Today Jailolo is a small town with a port serving the northwest coastal villages of Halmahera. The town is about 20 km north of the island of Ternate.
