The construction of the fort commenced in 1736 to safeguard the entrance to the Cumberland Sound and the St. Mary’s River. However, it wasn't completed until the mid-1800s when its significance heightened, particularly during the Civil War.

The fort is in a beautiful spot, on the Nassau sound. You can see the ocean, the sound, the intercoastal waterways and Cumberland island in Georgia.
Also the history is interesting, and the architecture quite impressive.
It is a quaint place (as far as this is possible for a military construction).
