The lake was created in 1610 at the instigation of Maharaja Man Singh I, who resided in Amber. For this purpose, an almost 300 m long wall, which has since been renewed several times, was built to hold up the water that flows down from the surrounding mountains during the summer monsoon rains.
After a decades-long slumber and extensive restoration work, the palace can be visited by tourist boats again at the beginning of the 21st century. On its upper floor there are several souvenir shops and a café.
