The castle was presumably built by the Weissenburg Monastery (St. Peter and Paul) to protect a crossing over the Rhine. The warlike Alemanni and Hungarian cavalry came up the river from the southeast.
After the castle was abandoned, it was thoroughly demolished and the material used for other buildings. Today, only the hill and the ditch-like cut remain.

Mountainbiking
On a high over 10 meters above the Rhine low mountain called Dorschberg stood the castle Affelderle, the Middle High German word for apple tree. It was probably in the 10th century. from the monastery of Weissenburg to protect the monastery property and the Rhine crossing today's Maximiliansau to protect against the Normans.
