The history of Castel Sant'Angelo begins in the year 135 AD, at the request of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) to have a funerary mausoleum built for him and his family, commissioning it to the architect Demetriano. In the emperor's thoughts there was a monumental tomb in the style of the Mausoleum of Augustus, but much larger in size.
