The late Ice Age moraine clay from which the earth pyramids are made is around 25,000 years old. The boulders on top are harder and have prevented the underlying clay from washing out. The result is the bizarre landscape forms seen here. The eroded steep slopes with the outstanding pyramids are up to 15 meters high. You can see them very well if you take the short detour to the viewing platform.

Great view from the viewing platform, this time the clay is rather white... and when the sun shines on it at a special angle, the layers of earth shine very brightly. Great viewing platform, which is worthwhile (it is further up compared to the Keschtnweg).

What is the geological process behind the formation of the Piramidi di terra nel Castro?

The Piramidi di terra nel Castro are formed from moraine clay soil deposited by glaciers during the last Ice Age, approximately 25,000 years ago. The process begins with erosion from heavy rainfall. Where a large stone or boulder sits on the clay, it acts as a 'hat', protecting the earth directly beneath it from being washed away. As the surrounding unprotected clay erodes, the protected column rises, forming the pyramid. When the pyramid thins too much to support its 'hat', it collapses, and new ones form elsewhere.

These range from cozy, traditional lodgings to more modern hotels, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Is the Piramidi di terra nel Castro wheelchair accessible?

While some sections of the trails, particularly in the villages and paved paths, might be accessible, the main viewing platforms and the immediate areas around the earth pyramids involve natural terrain, including gravel paths and some uneven surfaces. Therefore, full wheelchair accessibility to all viewpoints is limited.
