There are several legends about the origin of the rock, which is said to resemble an old woman wearing a headscarf. Tης γριάς το πήδημα means "the leap of the old woman" - she is said to have jumped from the mountain (Tης Γριάς το Κάστρο = the castle of the old woman), either out of solitude or while fleeing the Turks:
