located in the department of Putumayo. Also known under the pseudonym Paraíso Amazónico and Capital Petrolera del Putumayo. Orito grew around the oil exploitation camps in the Amazon foothills starting in 1963. Population growth was accelerated due to the high migration of people from the rest of Colombia attracted by oil exploitation. At present it is the third most populous municipality in the department. In 1978 Orito was declared a municipality.
