In addition to local flood protection, the flood retention basins essentially serve a supra-local flood protection function. The goal is to ensure 100-year flood protection (with a climate surcharge, where possible) for the municipalities in the Körsch catchment area once the basin system is fully developed.

The new flood protection structure in front of Scharnhausen is impressive. The roads and cycle paths were also partially resurfaced.
