Boundary Stone Karlstein am Main / Bavaria 🚴♂️
According to anecdotal tradition, the name "Karlstein" goes back to Emperor Charlemagne. He often stayed at the Seligenstadt Monastery, directly opposite Karlstein, and enjoyed hunting in the Spessart Mountains. To get there, he crossed the Main River to what was then still called "Tettingen." The stone at the landing stage, or the boundary stone between "Tettingen" and "Walinesheim," was then called "Karlsteyn." The addition of "am Main" distinguishes Karlstein from other places of the same name.

The current place name “Karlstein am Main” goes back to an old boundary stone on the former district boundary between the districts of Dettingen and Großwelzheim on the banks of the Main. It is mentioned under the Latin name “lapis Caroli” in various early documents and maps, for the first time around 900 AD in the Aschaffenburg forest description. According to legend, Charlemagne is said to have crossed the Main at this point during his stays at the Seligenstadt monastery in order to go on hunting trips in the Spessart.
