Legend tells of a couple out walking on the moor who encountered the local Pixies (Piskies) who brought down a mist to prevent them from finding their way. After much walking around in circles, the couple found a well and partook of the waters.
This instantly broke the Piskies' spell, and they could make their way down to Okehampton. In gratitude, the couple erected a cross by the well, so that anyone could find it, take the water and dispel the Piskies' spells.
The well itself is now covered in granite slabs, but the cross is still there.
