Situated at an elevation of approximately 9 metres, this impressive structure connects the N9 road, specifically Scheepsdalelaan, with the Blankenbergse and Oostendse Steenweg. Cykling

This superb tilting bridge (typical of Flanders and the Netherlands), built in 2011, replaces the old Vierendeel type bridge, considered to be one of the oldest still in operation.
This replacement was made at the cost of a long battle between heritage supporters and the city authorities.
Despite the promises, nothing seems to have been done to preserve the structure of the old 1923 bridge by installing it elsewhere...
When we crossed this bridge, we had no doubts about the history associated with it.

What was the historical significance of the original Scheepsdalebrug?

The original Scheepsdalebrug was a unique riveted swing bridge of the Vierendeel type, designed by Arthur Vierendeel himself. Constructed in the early 1930s, it was considered the oldest surviving Vierendeel bridge in Belgium and potentially the world, and likely the only Vierendeel swing bridge globally. Its innovative open frame design without diagonals was a significant contribution to structural engineering, making it a landmark of industrial archaeology.
