It was Professor Arthur Koepchen who, as a member of the technical board of RWE, provided the decisive impetus for the construction of the pumped storage power plant in Herdecke an der Ruhr - and gave the plant its name.
The Koepchenwerk was built between 1927 and 1930. It generated electrical energy from hydroelectric power and, as part of a national network, improved the utilization and profitability of coal-fired power plants.
