A crossing of the Rhine with a ferry at the foot of Limburg, near the municipality of Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl, was first mentioned in 1417. In 1873, a ship's bridge followed, which was destroyed in November 1944. In 1945, the French armed forces built a pontoon bridge, which was opened to civil traffic in 1961. In 1974 the planning for a fixed Rhine crossing began, which was concluded in 1982 with the signing of a state treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Republic on the construction of bridges.
