    Mariposa County was incorporated in September 1850, before California became the 31st state of the Union. Four years later, the Mariposa County Courthouse was built. Since then, the court has conducted normal proceedings in this courthouse uninterruptedly - the longest tenure for any courthouse west of the Rocky Mountains

    This is one of the oldest courthouses in the west still in daily use. Most parts of the building are still original. A few lamps have been modernized but the same oil lamps remain. The wood of the chairs, benches and tables is original. This courthouse really takes you back in time
