In 1720, Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel declared his willingness to take over 40 Waldensian families from France who had previously found accommodation in Württemberg, and founded the village of French Todenhausen for them (in contrast to German Todenhausen).
The church building, built in quarry stone, a simple structure with a hipped roof and an eight-sided roof turret, began in 1744, but according to an inscription plaque inside the church, it was not inaugurated until September 21, 1755. It was not until 1784 that the church received a bell that still exists today.
