The term Lost Place is a pseudo-anglicism and means "forgotten place". The correct term in English is "abandoned premises" or colloquially "off the map".
The older generation of locals still knows the significance of the old buildings here.

On the Grosser Gleichberg in southern Thuringia, a former volcano, the Römhild quarry was located from 1901 to 1968, of which the ruins of the crushing plant still stand.

Basalt was mined in two quarries on the Großer Gleichberg, the Gleichamberg quarry and the Römhild quarry. There was a cable car in each case, which transported the basalt in wagons to the basalt works in Römhild at the train station and to Gleichamberg.

The stones were used to build paved highways, then known as artificial roads, and cobblestone roads, but also for building. Basalt from the quarries on the Großer Gleichberg can still be found on cobblestone roads all over Germany today.

During the Nazi era, from August 1943 to March 1945, there was a labor education camp in the Römhild quarry in which a maximum of around 400 "foreign ethnic" forced laborers who had broken their contracts were interned. The prisoners had to work in the basalt quarry or in the basalt works at Römhild train station. It must be assumed that at least 500 prisoners died in the camp or on the evacuation march in 1945.
