Speightstown, Barbados' second-largest city, has a little more character than the surrounding communities and is a bustling hub of the west coast. It was once a thriving trading port. The streets are lined with colonial-era architecture, the marina is teeming with yachts, and the long, white-sand beaches are dotted with food stalls and sunbathers. Street vendors sell fruit and vegetables, fishermen mend their nets and unload their catch, and visitors stroll the esplanade. Though Speightstown is a little dirtier than Barbados' upscale resorts, what it lacks in glitz it more than makes up for in local charm
