In September 1939, a battle took place here that went down in history as the Polish Thermopylae. The German attack of 42,000 soldiers fought with 720 Poles who occupied combat bunkers. The last point of resistance was the bunker in Strękowa Góra, where Captain Władysław Raginis commanded. When the ammunition ran out, the commander ordered his soldiers to surrender, and in accordance with his oath that he would not abandon his post, he blew himself up along with his bunker, with the last grenade that remained in the hold.
