The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne is one of the most important works of Ottoman architecture, designed by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan at the behest of Sultan Selim II. Construction of the mosque took place between 1568 and 1574. Sinan, who began the project at the age of 80, called the mosque his "masterpiece," culminating his lifelong quest for architectural perfection and optimal proportions.

The interior is richly decorated with Iznik tiles from the heyday of this art. These tiles, with their characteristic red and blue patterns, are found around the mihrab and the walls, contributing to the mosque's unique aesthetic. A notable detail is the inverted tulip motif on one of the tiles. According to tradition, this symbolizes the stubbornness of the land's original owner, who refused to sell his tulip field for the mosque's construction.
