This remarkable monument erected in the 1990s honours Stefan Stambolov, the statesman who served as Prime minister between 1887 and 1894 and helped establish and stabilize Bulgaria as a modern European state. He was killed in 1895 by sabre blows by Russian-hired hitmen not far from the spot where the monument stands - this what the split head symbolizes. The head is placed directly in view of the Russian church (built in the 1880s) which is in the background behind the park.
