The Grand Ducal Museum was opened in 1869 as one of the first German museum buildings. The Czech master builder Josef Zítek designed the domed central building in neo-renaissance style. The side risalites of the Neues Museum Weimar are covered by glazed tent roofs. At the beginning of the 1920s pioneering exhibitions of modern art took place here.
After 50 years of vacancy, the Landesmuseum had degenerated into a full ruin by 1989, after not inconsiderable damage to the war and subsequent neglect, it was moved to the cultural year 1999 in the original state of construction and expanded.
