Wilhelm Albrecht quickly recognized the wind, which swept across the then barren highlands and carried away the topsoil, as one of the causes of the low crop yields in the Westerwald. To protect the arable land from the wind, he had the so-called protective hedges (strips of spruce plantations) created, which characterize the landscape of the Renneroder plateau today. In honor of Wilhelm Albrecht, a monument was built in Emmerichenhain in 1879 to commemorate the savior of the Westerwald.
