The Champtoceaux Castle Gate is the gate to the ancient fortified town and castle of Champtoceaux, which was a strategic site in the Middle Ages and witnessed numerous battles and alliances. You will be able to admire the two towers still standing which bear witness to the past glory and power of this place.

This gate opened the castle and the town to the East. But its current state when compared with the rest of the remains is too good to be true: it has been rebuilt, and not identically.
You can see the ruins of the Saint Jean-Baptiste priory.

The Château de la Champtoceaux, on the Domaine de la Colinière, is located in an area of 30 hectares overlooking the Loire from 70 meters.

Due to its exceptional geographical location, this site was first a Roman oppidum then became a fortified medieval city, Châteauceaux (castrum celsum), ancient name of Champtoceaux, enclosed by walls and with a surface area twice that of from Carcassonne!
