This bridge is emblematic of Aubusson. Originally made of wood, it was essential for commercial exchanges on the road from Limoges to Clermont-Ferrand. It was rebuilt with stones from the castle (itself dismantled on the orders of Rochelieu). There remains a castle (from the 15th century) on the left bank, which formerly housed the archers in charge of the defense of the building.

What is the historical significance of Pont de la Terrade?

The Pont de la Terrade is a historically significant bridge, inscribed on the inventory of historical monuments since 1926. It was originally a vital crossing point over the Creuse River, serving as the main road to Limoges. The current stone bridge, built between 1638 and 1641, utilized materials from the dismantled feudal castle of 'Le Chapitre,' a former Protestant stronghold. Its preservation is remarkable because its importance as a main thoroughfare diminished in the late 18th century, diverting modern traffic and leaving it largely unmodified.

Are there any specific architectural details to look for on the bridge?

Absolutely. The bridge features two distinctive pointed arches (arcs brisés) supported by a robust central pier. This pier is notable for its strong triangular breakwaters (brisants triangulaires) on each side. Along the deck, you'll find a balustrade, and on the downstream side, three sculpted stones arranged in a pyramid shape. On the right bank, partially effaced coats of arms, including a French escutcheon, can still be seen, offering a glimpse into its past.

What is the Maison Chirac and its connection to the bridge?

The Maison Chirac is a surviving gatehouse located on the left bank of the bridge. Historically, two such gatehouses served as toll houses at the city's entrance. Today, the Maison Chirac is notable for its circular tower with a shingle roof, typical of the Limousin region. It now houses a tapestry cartoon restoration workshop and is connected by a footbridge to the Tapestry Cartoon Museum, highlighting Aubusson's renowned tapestry heritage.
