Built from 1845 for the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Nordbahn, the stone arch bridge was first used in 1848. Some houses in the suburb of Melsung, to the east of the Fulda river, had to give way for the major project to bridge the Kirchhof valley. The railway viaduct, built in a curve and approximately 120 meters long, consists of 12 arches, each with a clear width of 7.10 meters. It is faced with red sandstone blocks that were quarried on the nearby Lindenberg.

Viaduct (the or that; Switzerland, Austria only: the viaduct) from Latin via "way" and ductus "guide, line", i.e. something like "overpass", is a neoclassical word formation, based on aqueduct (Roman aqueduct).[1] Viaducts are more or less high and long bridges for railways, but also road bridges that, like an aqueduct, consist of several bridge spans - especially when they lead over a valley or depression with arches on pillars with little gradient. The elevated routes of elevated roads and railways are also called viaducts, regardless of whether the routes are led over a row of arches or another structure.

History

Numerous viaducts were built in ancient times, especially in the Roman Empire. However, it wasn't until the construction of railways around 1830 that the construction and use of such structures increased again. In addition to the important aqueducts running at a single elevation, there are also the arched viaducts of the Via Praenestina between Rome and Gabii, with semicircular vaults and pillars made of tuff blocks, and those of the Via Appia near Aricia. The Pont Serme in southern France reached a remarkable length of 1,500 meters,[2] but, apart from its foundations, has disappeared from the landscape.
