The bridge is named after Enneüs Heerma, who was chairman of the Christian Democratic Appeal, city councilor in Amsterdam and twice State Secretary under Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. Together with the Nescio Bridge, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that connects IJburg with the east of Amsterdam, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the district.
Completed in 2001, the steel bridge was designed by Grimshaw Architects and is 230 meters long, 38 meters wide and 26 meters high and carries a thoroughfare and a tram line.
