The Stillup Dam, known locally as "Speicher Stillup" or "Staudamm Eberlaste," is a remarkable man-made monument nestled in the picturesque Stillup Valley, a side valley branching off from Mayrhofen in Tyrol, Austria. Situated within the High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps, this artificial lake sits at an elevation of approximately 1,116 meters (3,661 feet) and is one of five reservoirs in the Zillertal valley, impounding meltwater from surrounding glaciers to create a stunning turquoise expanse.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Are there specific hiking trails suitable for families with young children around Stillup Dam?

Yes, the Stillup Dam area is considered very family-friendly. Beyond the short path crossing the dam itself, there are easy walks along the reservoir that are suitable for children. The area around Gasthof Wasserfall and Stillupperhaus offers places to play and enjoy the scenery without strenuous hiking. For slightly older children, the path to the 'Coronation' waterfall is also a rewarding, relatively easy option.

What are the options for accommodation near Stillup Dam?

While there are refreshment stops like Gasthof Wasserfall and Stillupperhaus directly at the dam, these are primarily for food and drink. For overnight accommodation, you would typically look to Mayrhofen, which is the closest major town and offers a wide range of hotels, guesthouses, and apartments. More rustic options like the Grüne Wand Hut or Kasseler Hut are available for multi-day hikers further into the mountains.

Is Stillup Dam accessible for visitors using wheelchairs or strollers?

The main access road to Stillup Dam is paved, and the area around the dam itself and the Gasthof Wasserfall is relatively flat. While some paths along the reservoir might be suitable for robust strollers, dedicated wheelchair-accessible paths are not explicitly highlighted. It's best to expect some uneven terrain once you venture beyond the immediate dam area.

Can I bring my dog to Stillup Dam and are there dog-friendly trails?

Yes, the Stillup Valley is generally dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome on the trails, but it's important to keep them on a leash, especially due to the presence of wildlife in the High Mountain Nature Park Zillertal Alps. Always remember to carry water for your dog and clean up after them. Most of the hiking paths around the reservoir are suitable for dogs.

What is the best way to avoid crowds when visiting Stillup Dam?

The Stillup Dam is a popular destination, especially during summer weekends and holidays. To avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Weekdays outside of peak holiday periods will generally be less busy. Arriving before mid-morning is also recommended for better parking availability.

Are there any specific viewpoints or photo spots around Stillup Dam that are highly recommended?

Absolutely! The dam itself offers fantastic panoramic views of the turquoise lake and surrounding peaks. The 'Coronation' waterfall is a spectacular photo opportunity, especially in early summer when meltwater is abundant. Walking along the dam wall provides unique perspectives, and the reflections of the mountains in the lake are particularly stunning on calm days. Any elevated point along the trails will offer great scenic shots.

What are the difficulty levels of the hiking trails around Stillup Dam?

The trails around Stillup Dam range from easy to challenging. You can find leisurely, flat walks along the reservoir suitable for all ages and fitness levels. More ambitious hikers can tackle routes leading to mountain huts like the Grüne Wand Hut, which are moderate, or even connect to the demanding Berliner Höhenweg via the Kasseler Hut, which requires significant experience and fitness.

Is it possible to visit Stillup Dam during the winter months, and are there winter hiking routes?

While the intro highlights summer, visiting Stillup Dam in winter offers a different, serene experience. However, access might be limited due to snow, and the toll road may be closed or require specific winter equipment. Some trails might be suitable for winter hiking or snowshoeing, but conditions can be challenging, and it's crucial to check local conditions and avalanche warnings before heading out. The 'Coronation' waterfall might be frozen, offering a unique sight.

How long does it take to walk around the Stillup Dam reservoir?

A full circular walk directly around the entire Stillup Dam reservoir is not a single, defined path for its entire length. However, you can enjoy pleasant walks along sections of the reservoir. A popular, relatively easy walk involves crossing the dam and following paths along the lake, which can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on how far you venture and your pace. More extensive hikes into the valley will naturally take longer.

Are there any local tips or 'hidden gems' to enhance a visit to Stillup Dam?

For a unique experience, consider taking the public bus up the toll road to enjoy the scenic journey without worrying about parking. Keep an eye out for wildlife like chamois and marmots, especially in quieter areas. The 'Coronation' waterfall is a must-see, particularly in spring/early summer. Don't miss trying local Tyrolean specialties at Gasthof Wasserfall or Stillupperhaus for an authentic taste of the region.
