The imposing Hohenwerfen Fortress is enthroned on a rock 100 meters above the Salzach. The medieval castle was built almost 1,000 years ago and has been expanded again and again. Until 1987 it was a training center for the gendarmerie and has only since been opened to tourism.
If you don't use the fortress lift and walk up, the entrance fee is a bit cheaper. The seasonally different opening times (usually open from 9 a.m.) can be found at salzburg-burgen.at/de/burg-hohenwerfen.
