The port of Fresne was once an important port, which gradually lost its navigability due to the silting up of the bay of Bourgneuf, in favor of the port of Collet, downstream on the Falleron.
Nowadays, fisheries have replaced ships and the lock is only used to regulate the water level in the marshes, over the seasons.
